A few articles and thoughts from weekend posts online… (click on the links)
Known in this as “the war nobody won”, here’s an article about this weekend’s reenactments in Ontario and, more so, the continuing debate surrounding the War of 1812: Canada.com
I’m having trouble linking to the press release, but here’s the official website for the War of 1812 Ale’s reintroduction: War of 1812 Ales. If you google around I’m sure you can find the release. It’s from Sackett’s Harbor, NY; wouldn’t this sort of thing be great for Clipper City Brewing Co.or some local hop heads? To be fair, it appears Clipper City has a McHenry beer, but I say a bicentennial brew or two is in order. Anyone have ideas for names? (Ale-xandria, Pig Point Pale, Benedict Brown, Riversdale Red?) Let’s get some together and send’m along!
Did you know the War was in Wisconsin too? Here’s a link to some information about a reenactment over the weekend there: Prairie du Chien Reenactment
The Baltimore Sun featured the War of 1812/Star-Spangled Banner children’s series in the Anne Arundel Date Book. Lots of great kids’ activities are planned through Friday. Morning sessions will be 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and afternoon sessions are 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Each session is limited to 20, ages 6 to 11, at the Captain Salem Avery House Museum.
For any out-of-the-area readers (or locals who want to pretend they’re on a far-away vacation!) it turns out the JW Marriott in DC is doing a Star-Spangled Banner package this summer. 5% is even donated to the National American History Museum’s Star Spangled Fund!
The Syracuse (NY) Post-Standard has started a series of day-trips and most recently featured Sackett’s Harbor (I wonder if it has anything to do with the beer release, above). Here’s that piece: Sackett’s Harbor. One of their criteria spending four hours or less in the car. Just think how rich we are in 1812 sites, that we’ll be able to slate many such trips, some of which will overlap with the Capt. John Smith NHT, Chesapeake Bay Gateways, and other recreation and historic sites.
Here’s a great quiz to try yourself and, if you’re a teacher, try on your kids! Battle of Baltimore Quiz I passed with flying colors now but, I probably would’ve gotten a 30 or 40 before starting this job – heh
